An unconvincing Win
The Seagulls were 15th last season and Graham Potter's Brighton Hove & Albion might take inspiration from their arch rival - Crystal Palace. The Red Devils lost to Crystal palace in their season opener and Brighton would have wanted to repeat the feat.
It would have been tad harsh on Bruno Fernandez today but nevertheless it is the second instance in this season that OGS' men have conceded a penalty in a game. But for the two off sides, the game would have been a 5 -2 and the score line looked a bit more convincing than what it looked like in the end. Having said this, the 2 close shaves with the attempts hitting the wood work twice was a saving grace for the depleting pride of De Gea. A score line of 3 - 4 would have been a far more depressing than 3 - 2. This is the most clueless football I have seen from Manchester United after the David Moyes era.
I am not excited about the win because it flirted with being inconsistent and unconvincing for the style and substance of a Manchester United Team. I was hoping Eric Bailley would start in place of Lindelof but Lindelof survived to make some more mistakes on the day. The more I see him, the more I am convinced that he looks afraid and lost in the scheme of things. His mistakes are not out of being over zealous, mistakes look more out of losing depth in understanding the opponent.
As it happens with any team, Brighton enjoyed a very good first 15 minutes at the Falmer Stadium. By the time Manchester United attempted their first, Brighton had attempted 4 times. Manchester United lacked urgency, they lacked the ruthlessness of the top flight team which would push an opponent almost on the other side of the table to defensive straight away. Instead, Brighton inspired by the other minnows who defeated OGS' men went for the kill.
There are some serious bad habits which Manchester United is enduring and the early they get rid of them the better. Being very casual in defence, losing possession by trying to be creative, lacking the killer intent to keep the ball moving forward and finally controlling the pace of the game - basically making it faster than the opponent's imagination.
The extra time surprises have had both teams flustered but i thought the minnows played with intent and still ended up on the losing side. As a ManU fan, i loved the way Brighton put pressure on the Red Devils. My verdict is that it is the most constipated display of football skills by one of the world's resourceful teams.
